Although I'm a newcomer to the Monterey Bay area, it already feels like home because I've been visiting here for twenty-five years. I was born in Detroit to Southern parents and we moved back to Tennessee when I was thirteen. I attended the University of New Mexico in the early eighties, and have lived in the South since then, but my heart has always been in California.
For the last twenty-three years I have been a practicing chiropractic physician, something I'm very fond of and rather good at. I have been interested in alternative health since my grandfather taught me about it as a young teen. I still practice a bit, but am semi-retired to pursue other interests. The martial arts have been a longtime hobby of mine. I began training at sixteen, and --- somehow or another --- have managed to remain active almost 39 years! I have studied many styles but kung fu remains my favorite.
As a young man I worked in a variety of jobs before returning to college and deciding on chiropractic as a career. I spent five years working in factories. During the end of the Vietnam era I had a high lottery number and missed the draft. The military remained an interest to me and I enlisted in the US Army at the age of 24, something unusual then. I was the oldest guy in the company during basic training. Now they are taking people up to forty-five years old! I decided to try out for Special Forces, the famed Green Berets, and the gave me a try. I managed to make it through the training and served as a weapons sergeant with two Special Forces Groups before leaving the Army to attend chiropractic college.
As a youth I used to draw and paint a great deal. For a while I wasn't too bad. I stopped while working and attending college with a family, and now I've lost the knack. However, somewhere along the way I took up music, and on a good night I can rock and roll pretty well. I sing and play piano and guitar. Oldies like Rockabilly are my favorite [my earliest memory is Chuck Berry playing Johnny B. Goode! on mom's old AM cabinet radio]. I have started painting again in oils, but it's been slow going. Oh, well . . .!
In 1995 I decided to write a book on spiritual phenomena. I have always been a science geek, but they dismiss all the things most of us know to be true in our hearts, the spiritual stuff that has accompanied humankind throughout the ages. It took almost fourteen years, but The Force is With Us made it to the bookstore shelves in September 2009! It's getting good reviews and appears regularly on Amazon's bestseller lists. I'm currently working on a sequel.
I'm very spiritual, and my personal life philosophy is that love and practicing the Golden Rule do the most good. Before coming to Monterey, I was affiliated with the wedding business in the Great Smoky Mountains of Tennessee where I lived for many years. Being involved with a couple during this most special day is great! Marriage is a sacred bond, and helping with a wedding is a lot of fun. It's a great thing when you love what you do!
